The Mud Hut Light Therapy
What is light therapy?
In the early 1990s red light was used by scientists to help grow plants in space. The scientists found that the intense light from red light-emitting diodes (LEDs) helped to promote growth and photosynthesis of plant cells.
Red light was then studied for its potential application in medicine, specially to find out if light could increase energy inside human cells... and it was found that it could indeed penetrate deep into the skin where the cells can absorb it and use it to create more energy if the light was emitted at specific wavelengths, so medical equipment was developed to emit light to treat specific problems.
LED treatment is a completely natural process. It exposes the skin to levels of light that are not harmful, unlike UV light coming from the sun.
What are the benefits of light therapy?
With this extra energy the cells are able to better respond to damage and rejuvenate themselves, leading to:
- Increased collagen production, which tightens the skin and increases elasticity.
- Increases in fibroblasts, which are involved in the production of collagen fibres.
- Increased blood circulation.
- Protects cells from damage.
- Improved facial texture.
- Reduces fine lines.
- Reduces wrinkle severity.
- Reduces sun damage.
- Improves skin clarity.
Light therapy is not only used to improve many skin conditions and undesirable effects such as broken capillaries and other causes of discolouration, it is also used for the treatment of joint pain and many other conditions.
Treatment programme
Various combinations of wavelengths / colours can be used to treat different skin concerns. Red light is often used but other specific conditions such as acne vulgaris are addressed with other colours, alone or in combination, where the light combination penetrates deep into the skin and affects sebum production while also reducing inflammation and irritation in the area.
The therapist will assess and advise the client which light wavelengths are likely to work best for their skin and this may vary over time.
